| Our guide told us a story yesteray about how the SARS virus epidemic started. It all started in a local Cantonese restaruant here in Guangzhou. They served a local soup made with "city" cat and seafood which is a local favorite. The cats were carying the SARS virus and it rapidly spread through the local community then on to the world. After the virus was eliminated the goverment called in fortune tellers and asked them to determine whether the SARS epidemic was over. The fortune tellers told the goverment officials that as long as lightning did not strike the goat statue for two years SARS would be over. SO what did the goverment do? They built a huge lightning rod next to the goat statue. No lightning strike, no more SARS. We were at the goat statue when he told us the story. SARS is not a humerous converation piece, but I thought the fortune teller part was pretty comical.
Today we took Hannah for her adoption "medical" exam. If you look at the pictures out on dropshots you will get ideas of what it was like. It was unorganized chaos, but they manage to move all the babies through the three stations. Yes, they do test the babies hearing by playing a toy piano and shaking a rattle. Hannah passed all the tests and we were set free for the remainder of the day. I went on a cab ride with three others from our group to downtown Guangzhou to the Computer and Electonics district. I was able to purchase a new firewire card so that i can now upload video again. Yeah! I actually purchased two, just in case. I have posted the other part of Hannah's gotcha day video on dropshots under the May 09 section. We are pretty excited because we are going to get to go to chuch in the morning. There is a bilangual service at 11:00. There are quite a few fmailies from our group that are going. it should be pretty neat. I am going to get to go to Hannah's orphange and her finding spot on Tuesday. Only one partent per family is being allowed to go and no babies. It is going to be a long hard day, but I would regret it if one us did not go and document her beginings. Kim and Hannah are in bed so I had better wrap this up. We miss everyone and are ready to head home. One more week. Pat |
